KiloWhat.energy was launched in 2015 with the mission of providing Texans with better information about their options when it comes to electricity plans so that consumers can benefit from deregulation of the electricity market.

Terminology
Here are some terms that are helpful in understanding how to shop for electricity.
- EFL (Electricity Facts Label): Standardized document that contains the essential details of an electricity plan such as the rates, contract length, early termination fees, and renewable energy content.
- ESID (Electric Service Identifier): A number (typically 17 or 22 digits) that serves as the identifier for an electricity service delivery point, such as a residence.
- REP (Retail Electricity Provider): The company that sells electricity to consumers. The REP establishes the contract and bills for usage, but does not generate the electricity.
- TDU (Transmission/Distribution Utility) or TDSP (Transmission/Distribution Service Provider): The company that owns and maintains the infrastructure that moves the electricity from where it is generated to the consumer. The main TDUs in Texas are Centerpoint, Oncor, Texas-New Mexico Power, and American Electric Power (AEP). Here is a map of the areas covered by each TDU
